Heaven in the Humble: When Serving Reflects the Divine

Have you thought about the power of serving others with humility? Can you find joy in everyday tasks? Does serving feel like a burden sometimes? Lately, I’ve been touched by how humble service shows God’s heart. Can we serve quietly, without needing praise or attention? Motivated by love, we help carry others’ burdens.

Jesus showed us the true power of humble service. Sometimes He told people He healed not to tell anyone. Even with crowds following Him, He focused on hearing God and praying alone. Remember when He met the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well, away from others? Jesus didn’t care about followers or fame. He loved God and people by kneeling to wash the dirty feet of friends who denied and abandoned Him. The greatest humble act was Jesus dying on the Cross—a perfect example of divine humility.

True servanthood embraces hidden humility.

A Heart Change

I've served in many roles, but my view of serving was wrong. I had a disconnect from the joy and love that motives me to give, so it felt more like a responsibility. But, I didn’t understand why. Then God gave me Dan to marry, the most servant-hearted person I’ve met.

If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.
John 12:26

Witnessing Dan Fessler humbly serve others forever changed my relationship with God.

The Kitchen Sermon

When we were dating, Dan would drive through rush hour traffic to thoroughly clean my cottage and bring me a smoothie after work. I was amazed by his selfless sacrifice, never expecting anything in return. Unsure why he was seemed so happy serving with tedious chores, I asked, "Why are you doing this?"

He smiled and said, "I know you've been carrying heavy burdens. I wanted to ease them so you could rest after your long work and three-hour commute." Cheerfully, he kept humming as he cleaned.
In that moment, I felt Jesus' presence through his kindness. I cried like I had seen Jesus himself. Except for reading about Brother Lawrence, a 17th-century monk, I had never met such humble, Christlike love in a person.

Unconditional love. Joy in lifting burdens. A model of meekness.

Humble Servants Speak Without Words

Have you noticed how a quiet strength emanates from genuine servants? The entire atmosphere shifts when they enter a room—inviting peace, security, and stability. Their presence speaks louder than words. A true servant makes others feel seen, understood, appreciated, and worthy of time and affection.

One day, while praying for my husband, I sensed God whisper: “Serving is an art form. It’s a reflection of My creative love.”

We often associate serving with the menial or mundane. Yet, humbly serving is a powerful force of love. What seems small is sacred. What feels simple is supernatural.

Avodah: When Work Becomes Worship

In Hebrew, the word “avodah” means work, worship, and service—not as separate acts, but a unified expression of love. God is interested in every moment and area of our lives, even those that feel mundane. Instead, He sees a seamless lifestyle of love to Him and others.

Cooking dinner isn’t just a chore—it’s sacred worship. Folding laundry. Taking out the trash. Holding space for others in pain.  God wants us to have a love-filled lifestyle, regardless of the activity.

Whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant… just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve…”
—Matthew 20:26–28 (NKJV)

True greatness is found in the unseen. The hidden. The humble.

Service as Spiritual Strength

Serving shows true strength, not weakness. It pierces pride, mends divisions, and conquers despair. Humble servants show others value, significance, and worth. Menial turned into majestic. The broken become brave. The hopeless rise up as heroes.

A Prayer for the Hidden Places

Father, thank You for showing Your great love through Your servants on earth. We are amazed that You serve us at the wedding feast! Thank You for reminding us that simple actions can be holy. Help us serve joyfully, without counting or complaining—even when tired or overwhelmed. Let us seek Your love and acceptance through Jesus, not human praise. In a divided world, make us instruments of Your peace, humble and merciful. Teach us to leave love in hearts, not just on social media. Let our homes be places of healing, kindness, and Your presence. Thank You for showing Your love through those who serve You and others well. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Divine in the Daily

How can we live each day to serve others? Maybe God's kingdom grows in kitchens, car rides, and grocery stores.? While I love miracles, perhaps God values a life changed by loving others selflessly, sitting with them during hard times. The greatest miracle is Christ’s victory and our life in Him. Whether at a crusade or helping the homeless, we keep our eyes on Him. Every moment we serve Him humbly is precious to God. Let’s focus again on loving God and people well.

It’s sacred.
It’significant.
Its deeply valuable.

Every quiet act of service is a brushstroke of heaven on earth.

“Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.”
John 13:17

Service isn’t a step down.  It’s the sacred step into God’s heart.
